Springfest 2024 Toronto 4th place Ghosties deck
Deck Description
NOTE: Pumpkin Necromancer is in the main deck. I do not run Lord Atomy. The 10th slot in the evolve deck should be Bellringer Angel (Evolved).
Intro
This deck is a BP03 deck focused on aggroing down the opponent and overwhelming them to the point where you're always in the driver's seat during the game. Opponents will feel helpless as they stare down massive boards that stem from one-to-two card combos.
Initially I had planned on bringing my BP03 earth rite deck to Springfest. However, after a lot of last minute testing with this iteration of my ghost deck, I realized that it acted as a great anti-meta call for both Alice and Hero decks.
Pros/Cons
+ Out-aggros heroic decks
+ Forces the opponent to respond to annoying cards (especially Masquerade Ghost (Evolved))
+ Can pump out massive damage (up to 13 with the right setup by turn 5) in a single turn
- Runs out of gas late game
- Struggles against decks that spam wards. Egg Haven becomes a grind when you don't want it to.
Matchups
I played this deck at Springfest in Toronto this past weekend with great results. The Springfest was held in a 3v3 format, so each individual matchup was a best of one. My team (shoutout to the rest of Team SKG) made it to top 4. I faced the following decks:
Uma (1-1 record)
Hero Sword (4-0 record)
Egg Haven (2-0 record)
Aggro Abyss (0-1 record)
Card by Card
Neutral Cards
You could slot in more aggressive options, but I found that Bellringer helped me maintain the offensive while helping me continue to overwhelm my opponent with other followers they must answer. One really cool combo is to use Soul Conversion when the opponent attacks her to draw 3 cards.
Didn't come up during tournament, but could be useful in a pinch when you open horribly. Hopefully you never have to go into this.
Abyss Cards
A great card to see in your opening hand. Accelerates your rushdown and enables Sanguine in scenarios where you also have a Skeleton Fighter at the ready. Opponents almost always need to find an answer to this card or else they risk a constant 2 damage poke.
Honestly never came up during the tournament. Underwhelming card that was mostly used for the Departed trait tied to it. You may sometimes run into a scenario where it becomes 2 attack instead of 1, but the problem is that they didn't give this poor guy the Storm keyword. Looking back, I'd opt to swap this out for Razory Claw or a 1-cost aggro option.
Annoying follower with the same perks as Ambling Wraith. One nice strategy is to play Demonium, Punk Devil on turn 2, then on turn 3 use the effect to enable Sanguine for a cheap 3/3 follower. Another card you love to see in your opening hand.
One of the MVPs of the deck. So much potential tied to such a simple effect. Bring out a ghost, smack your opponent, then sacrifice that ghost for a nearly free draw 2.
During the tournament, this card won me a game against a Heroic player due to the destruction ability. On turn 6, my opponent was at 9 health and I had to close it out or risk losing next turn. I had a Masquerade Ghost on the field and they were warded up to try to prevent my victory. I had a Ghost in the EX area. I first used the Phantom Howl in hand to bring out 4 ghosts with 2/1 stats. Then, I traded into their ward with Masq Ghost, killing it off and leaving them wide open. My 4 ghosts slammed into their leader for 8 damage, and I proceeded to use Soul Conversion to clear a spot on my full field to give room to my final ghost to swing for that last bit of damage.
Such a great card to counteract other aggro decks. 2/3 body with Bane is nothing to scoff at, and is great at protecting your other weaklings from taking hits. Going first, you can drop this down on turn 2 to protect the 1-cost follower that you're using to poke the opponent down.
2x Lesser Mummy
Decent card with a nice Strike effect when evolved. It's a departed follower, and I did find myself discarding him quite often for Mischievous Zombie.
So many people are afraid of this child. 3/2 body with an annoying effect. Yet another card that the opponent must answer.
Amazing card. Summons a ghost and digs for better cards if you discard a departed card from his effect (I run 26 departed cards). If your opponent has a beefy follower that is hard to deal with, simply evolve this guy for an easy out by giving your new ghost Bane.
Another great card. Placing a ghost in the EX area is so helpful for setting up for that explosive Masquerade Ghost turn. A threatening 3/2 stat line is nothing to scoff at either.
Absolute GOAT. 3 ghosts on evolve on a 4/4 body is ridiculous. One of the MVPs of the deck.
Honestly only ran her for the artwork, but her ability to give me a Gargantuan Ghost in the EX area came up against some of the aggro matchups. You don't want to see her often in your hand, but it works really well when you do see her.
3x Phantom Howl
This deck revolves around ghosts. This card brings out 4 of those... need I say more?
2x Cerberus
A staple in basically every Abyss deck out there. Such a versatile and threatening card. I almost always choose Coco so I can buff up my ghosts when they swing into the opponent, but I have chosen Mimi in scenarios where they have something like a Princess Snow White that I don't want to ram into. Evolving her also means you could have a threatening 9/5 on the board if you buff her up.
The anti-meta call. So many decks Alice decks thrive on destruction removal. Evolve this bad boy and you have a Masq Ghost that is too legit to quit. Additionally, the Gargantuan Ghost spam is insane against the other aggro decks floating around. This guy is an absolute unit that is the glue that holds this deck together. You absolutely need to see him midgame. A single maindeck Masquerade Ghost can float out a total of 3 times in this deck due to running 2 Masquerade Ghost (Evolved). I am tempted to run a 3rd copy in the evolve deck. The stat line is hella annoying for many decks too. It can't be outed by a surefire bullet alone.
1x Dark Alice
Great card that you can easily revive since you don't mill nor dig into the deck that much. Came up sometimes, and it usually meant that I already won the game when she arrives.
